About us.

The Society was originally founded in 1900 as the Widnes Photographic Society so we are presently enjoying our 125th Season but our first here in the Rainhill Recreation Club.

Our season runs from September through to the end of April meeting every Monday evening from  7-30pm to approx. 10-00pm.

We have an annual membership fee but first time visitors are welcome to attend for several evenings free of charge.

We are a social group who share a mutual interest in photography and wish to both share and develop our knowledge and skills.

This we achieve by:-

  • Hosting a variety of external speakers whose illustrated talks cover a wide genre of photography
  • Competitions of member’s Prints or Digitally Projected Images which are appraised by external judges
  • Practical hands on sessions
  • Casual discussions with other members allowing a sharing of knowledge

Through our membership of the Lancashire and Cheshire Photographic Union we have access to a range of photographic competitions, print folios, events and expertise to benefit members.

Our Program.

The program for the season 2025 / 2026 will be available from the end of April 2025.

Halton Photographic Society has a proud and impressive history.

The origins of Halton Photographic Society can be traced back to the late 1800’s. Widnes residents and petro-chemical engineers, Ferdinand Hurter (1844-1903) and Vero Charles Driffield(1848-1915) developed the Hurter & Driffield (H&D) photographic Speed System which revolutionised photography. Driffield was a founding member of the Widnes Photographic Society in 1900 which eventually became Halton Photographic Society.

Hurter and Driffield were jointly awarded the prestigious Progress Medal by the Royal Photographic Society in 1898 and their joint research revolutionised photography and is still in use today.
